Tour to Sacred Mountain

Sacro Monte - Campo dei Fiori

From Motovarese, KTM bike, KTM Motorbike, shop and rental (free pick up at Malpensa Airport), head towards the “Sacro Monte” (Sacred Mountain).

We recommend a visit to the Astronomical Observatory: excellent view from the square in front of the police station (you can only go on foot); you can also make a nice walk in the woods to Fort of Orino (a 4 km walk) from where you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Alps and the lakes.

In Campo dei Fiori you can also visit the old abandoned hotel (which reminds you of the hotel in the film "Shining") and the old funicular, and you can arrive at 3 crosses.

We recommend to stop for food and wine at the “Montorfano” restaurant (placed at the end of the beautiful path of the Chapels of the Sacred Mountain), where you can have lunch on the terrace in sunny days, enjoying the mild temperatures even in winter (due to the altitude and thermic inversion). We also recommend a stop at the bar called "the Borducan" (right in the middle of the little village of S. Maria del Monte), famous for its homonymous liqueur (with its secret recipe passed on from generation to generation within the family members only), but also for its wonderful panoramic terrace from where you can enjoy a slice of one of the lovely home-made cakes.

It’s really worthy a visit to the Sanctuary in the centre of the unique village of St. Maria del Monte, known for one of the few examples worldwide of statues representing a Black Virgin Mary (sculpted in black stone).

For the more “athletic” ones (and to art lovers), we suggest to leave your bike at the foot of the beautiful path of the Chapels of the Sacred Mountain, and to walk uphill to visit the 14 Chapels(it’s 2,5 km, and walking slowly enjoying the view it only takes about 45 minutes). The 14 Chapels are a masterpiece (recently proclaimed by Unesco “heritage of mankind”), each one unique in the building shape and in its content, each representing a different moment of the life of Christ (from Archangel Gabriel announcing her pregnancy to the Virgin Mary, to the resurrection of Jesus and the Ascent of Mary to Heaven), all depicted by live-size sculptures and paintings behind the statues.
